Johannes Brahms was a German composer from the Romantic Period. Born in Hamburg, he later settled down in Vienna, Austria.
Early Life
Born in Hamburg on May 7, 1833, Brahms, like many former composers, was taught first by his father. He, like many others, also showed great promise, and a great fortune. He started to compose early in his life, but later destroyed many of his original copies. He never gained much public notice, until he later went on a tour, where he met many composers, including Franz Liszt.
Midlife Years
After his friend Robert Schumann's death in 1856, Brahms spent most of his time between Hamburg and principality of Detmold, where he was constructor and composer. At the premiere of his Ein deutsches Requiem, the public greatly admired him. They took notice of his genius, and realized he had fulfilled Schumann's prophecy. He began to do many more traves for both his tour, and for his pleasure. He became an idol to many.
Death
In 1890, Brahms gave up composing. Later in his years, he contracted a cancer, which many believe was either in his liver or pancreas. Brahms, along with many more famous figures, was buried in Zentralfriedhof in Vienna.
